What was the last product you bought because of the hype and now regret?

Beauty Influencer’s Sunday Column Vol.5: Hyped Product I Regret Buying

Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes! I had burning eyes for three days from the fibers!

One of the advantages(?) of living in a place like NZ during times of hype is that it’s so difficult/expensive to get things that it (sort of) keeps you safe! Either that or the product only comes here 6 months after the US/EU hype anyway. I tend to have more regrets about how hopelessly behind everyone else I am when I do post about a ‘new’ item!

Benefit Gimme Brow! It failed me on many different levels. First of all, it smells like a rose bouquet that’s past its prime, and the scent really lingers. I had thought the small applicator would be more precise, but in combination with the wet consistency, it just deposits too much product in one spot. In the process of blending that out, I sometimes ended up with bald spots that I had to fill in again. I am also not a fan of the matte finish, as real hair should have a sheen to it.

Being on the hunt for a new mascara, I ventured into uncharted waters by purchasing a Giorgio Armani mascara for the first time. Seduced by its name and the amount of attention it receives, I picked up the waterproof version of Eyes To Kill. Unfortunately, it did barely a thing for my lashes: a very dry formula that didn’t do much lengthening as well as volumising. However, it did hold a curl which is not really an asset as my lashes were still barely visible. I’m therefore using this on my bottom lashes which works great leaving smudges at bay.

I’m a big fan of L’Occitane’s much raved about shea butter products, so when I got my hands on the moisturizing lip balm the thought that I might not love it as much as the other products from the range didn’t even cross my mind. But alas. It didn’t do anything for me. On the contrary even, the formula seemed to actually dehydrate my lips. So in the trash it went. Much sad. Very disappoint. Such upset. [insert doge face]

JAA | Thailand | Hello Jaa

Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover! It does a good job at removing waterproof and long-wear eye makeup but that’s about it. I don’t like the scent (strong and unpleasant), nor the greasy residue it leaves behind. I just don’t get the rave reviews at all. I have to always follow up with a separate cleanser to get rid of the oily film.

This is the thing I don’t understand. Some people report no oiliness whatsoever and here I am having an oily film everywhere it touches my skin! :(

No I haven’t! I probably should! I have just stocked up on my old favorite one, though, so I’m good for a while. :)

I’ve never tried Clarins Eye Makeup Remover- but I have recently started making my own. I have very stupidly sensitive skin, and nothing I’ve tried works well for me. I always end up with the feeling of my skin being on fire, or getting red and splotchy. I finally made my own from baby shampoo, baby oil, and water. It works great, is super affordable, and doesn’t irritate my eye area at all. Oh, it also works on waterproof mascara and liner!

Thanks for the tip, Jenny! I’m so glad you found something that works on your sensitive skin! The recipe sounds very much like my homemade brush cleansing solution recipe except I add olive oil instead (although lately I’ve been too lazy and just rely on the Beautyblender Solid cleanser to wash all my brushes and sponges. :))

I’ve never tried the Clarins remover but I’d hate the residue! Even though I’m going to cleanse probably, there are some days I’m only donning a swipe of mascara and lip balm and I might not have time to do a full-on cleanse. I’d need something clean feeling!

It’s so odd because some people report zero oily residue! I just finished a bottle and am unlikely to repurchase. Too bad since it’s very reasonably priced. :-/
