I always associate Becca with a simple, effortless, natural summer glow. Many of their bestsellers revolve around products that are proven to give your complexion the most sophisticated radiance. When I’m asked to recommend a good base for glowing skin, Becca always comes to mind! I’m still using Opal these days but lately I’ve been more into subtle illuminators that I can easily wear on its own to boost my skin’s natural glow. Again, Becca didn’t disappoint. Their Backlight Priming Filter is exactly what I was looking for. The glow given to my skin every time I use it is truly beautiful, the kind that is subtle, barely-there, but there. :)
Becca Backlight Priming Filter is a face primer packaged in Becca’s minimalist style of frosted glass bottle with a pump dispenser. The pump has a small nozzle allowing control of the amount dispensed easily. Usually I use half a pump on low-key days, and a full pump if following with complexion bases. It was created to act as an instant filter so that your skin imparts a soft, diffused glow whenever it catches light. Becca accomplished this by infusing three unique Filtering Luminescent Pearls into the formula for a pearlescent effect, plus a bonus vitamin E for anti-aging benefits. I detect a light sweet citrusy scent upon application but it doesn’t last long.
The product dispenses light golden beige but appears colorless once blended and set. It doesn’t seem to add any warm hue to my skin the way Opal does. The fluid texture isn’t runny, nor thick, but has more of a “whipped” texture to it. I find the formula light, slightly moisturizing but very smoothing for a glow-enhancing primer. The application is a breeze as it spreads quickly and melts into your skin without leaving behind any trace of glitter or shimmery particles. The crushed pearls used in this formula are truly finely-milled and almost impossible to detect unless through a magnifying lens.
It can be applied in so many ways:
- alone for an all-over radiance to enhance the skin’s natural glow or to perk up tired skin
- as a primer to create a smooth canvas for your foundation (it does help the foundation glide on more smoothly)
- mix with your complexion base to add light and life back to your skin (I for one don’t like the all-matte, flat look!)
- as a base or mix with your under eye concealer to brighten the eye area
- as a spot highlighter to softly enhance facial features such as brow bone, cheek bone, nose bridge, and cupid’s bow (love it when my skin is glowing in all the right places!)
- mix with your body lotion to give your whole body a lovely sheen (could get really expensive though, maybe on a special occasion!)
Even though you can practically use this primer anywhere you wish to, I personally avoid applying it on and around my nose where my pores are visible to avoid accentuating them. If you’re born with a flawless skin, then I say slather on! :)
The effect is literally subtle. I can see the pearly glow peeking through when topped with loose powder or tinted moisturizer. However, if you’re going to follow with a heavy-duty, full coverage foundation, I recommend mixing them together before applying to allow the pearlescent sheen to come through.
While it helps my foundation glide on, it doesn’t seem to have any effect on my makeup longevity. My face doesn’t seem to get any more or less oily than usual either. I guess it is a true glow-enhancing primer at heart and its sole purpose of existence is to give you a perfect lit-from-within look by boosting your skin’s natural glow in the most subtle and beautiful way. This is yet another wonderful product from Becca that I will continue to recommend to all my readers.
