Another photo-heavy post today, please be warned. :D I spot this Love At First Shine! set at Ulta during my Black Friday shopping and since I never tried any of Benefit Plush Lip Gloss before I thought it was a perfect time to try it! The set contains all 6 colors that Benefit is offering right now and they come in mini size – super cute! Now, let’s see some photos!
As I mentioned, these come in mini size just for this set. Each color is permanent so if you like only a few of them you can buy them separately. The packaging is a standard transparent squeeze-tube with a small opening on the slanted tip.
I really like the nice art deco-inspired design on the tube and I like the matching off-white color of the cap as well. Benefit lip gloss cap is a little more special than your typical lip gloss cap since it has ridges to give you a good grip when handling (you know how annoying it can be with a regular cap slipping through your hand and falling on the floor!) and it also has flat bottom so you can store the gloss upright to save space instead of lying down. Well done for the packaging!
The Love At First Shine! set includes:
- A-Lister -milky, shimmery/frosty bubblegum pink
- Fauxmance -berry with a hint of coral
- Kiss You – fuchsia purple
- Lollibop – hot pink
- Poutrageous! – coral
- Icebreaker – clear
First thing to note is, these glosses are sheer and they are marketed as so. They may look opaque with great pigmentation in the tube but when applied on lips, they appear just a light tint of color. They go on nearly clear and it’s hard to see any difference between them especially if you have naturally pigmented lips like I do (see lips swatches below). I think people with pale lips will appreciate these glosses more since the color would show up better on their lips.
Texture-wise, wow! They are smooth! Creamy, lush, and gel-like, and they glide onto lips with zero stickiness! They really do give your lips that soft, plushy feel and finish with a lot of shine – basically just all-around very moisturizing and super comfortable to wear. There is quite a bit of slip to the formula, though and together with the sheer pigmentation, I find the coverage to be unfortunately non-buildable.
There is a strong, sweet fruity scent to all of them that I can’t really put my finger on what exactly they smell like but the scent is quite overpowering especially within the first few minutes of application. I’m not particularly fond of the smell but I know a lot of people do so I think it’s just my preference. Good thing it doesn’t linger!
In terms of lasting power, sadly, they are short-lived. They go anywhere between 2-4 hours depending on the color. I find Fauxmance (berry) and Kiss You (purple) to last just a little longer than the rest but not by much, maybe an hour or so. Icebreaker (clear) is of course the fastest to go; it disappears from my lips within an hour but this is to be expected for non-sticky lip glosses with a lot of slip. After they fade, my lips feel slightly dry but not to the point that it’s unbearable or anything.
To me, these glosses are pretty to look at and they are good for those days when you are going out for a few hours and just want a hint of color and some shine on the lips. If you find that you truly like the texture but the lack of pigmentation bothers you, try mixing it with a lip stain or layer over a lipstick to improve the color payoff. For those who have pigmented lips, it doesn’t really matter what color you choose as they all look nearly the same but I’d at least suggest going for the darker shades as they are a tiny bit more pigmented. :)
