Let us all welcome a new addition to Benefit’s The POREfessional line! We already have the primers (The POREfessional Matte Rescue Invisible-Finish Mattifying Gel and The POREfessional Face Primer), the oil-blotting stick (The POREfessional License To Blot), and the loose powder (The POREfessional Agent Zero Shine) so it’s about time we had the foundation to complete the pore-be-gone ritual! Well, Benefit didn’t exactly advertise this new product as a “foundation” (they simply named it a “face makeup“) but its texture and performance reminds me of one. I will therefore categorize this as a foundation and review it as such!
Benefit The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Makeup sports the almost similar look to The POREfessional Agent Zero Shine with its cream-colored tube, twisting cap, and special applicator at the bottom. The packaging has 3 key features:
1. The custom pore-blurring sponge
The foundation comes equipped with its own applicator which is called the “custom pore-blurring sponge“. Simply twist the bottom of the tube to reveal it. To use, you’re supposed to apply a few drops of the foundation onto the top of the sponge, then dab it on problem areas or all over the face, and blend. I find the sponge soft but firm enough that it will not soak up too much product. It blends the foundation well onto the skin but due to its small size, I think it makes more sense if you’re only using it on small areas or for touch-ups. For a normal, full-face application, I think a Beautyblender or foundation brush will get the job done much quicker. And good news for those who may be concerned about hygiene, this sponge is completely washable!
2. The PRESS button
The PRESS button aka the FUN button! It is located on the back of the tube. This is where you press your finger on to “shoot” the foundation out through the tip dispenser (see key feature #3 below)! And I said “shoot” because this foundation is very watery. If you press this button too hard or aren’t careful, the liquid will splash onto everything (been there!). Once you get the hang of it, though, it’s pretty clever as it allows you to control the exact amount needed to dispense easily.
3. The ultra-fine tip dispenser
This ultra-fine tip allows you to dispense the liquid through a tube in a fine stream once you press on the FUN button. The reason for it to be this small and pointy is again, due to the watery texture of the foundation. You wouldn’t want to dispense too much of it at once!
So in short, to use this foundation, first you must shake the tube well to homogenize the content, then twist the bottom to reveal the sponge applicator. Next, press on the FUN button to dispense the foundation onto the sponge and apply it on the face where needed. Repeat for more coverage!
Now that we know how to use this fancy packaging, let’s move on to the other aspects of the product!
I’d describe Benefit The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Makeup as a sheer to medium coverage foundation with a super runny, watery texture and a soft, natural matte finish. The color I have is #2 Light which matches my current skin color seamlessly. The shade range is pretty limited as there are only 5 shades to choose from so hopefully you’ll be able to find your perfect match! The formula is scented similarly to the other products in the POREfessional line and contains mushroom extract known to help reduce the appearance of pores with continued use.
Despite the airy-light, watery texture, this foundation is actually rich in pigments! Hence, you don’t need a lot per application to yield good coverage. It disguises the look of enlarged pores really well as the name implies even when applied in thin layers. It also does well at covering redness but for acne marks or dark spots, this won’t cover them completely and you’ll need to follow with a concealer. I don’t find it to settle into pores or fine lines at all possibly due to its thin consistency.
You may have to blend the product a little faster than usual since it dries down rather quickly into a long-wearing matte finish. On my oily T-zone, only slight shine breaks through after about 3 hours of wear which is pretty impressive already. What’s even more impressive is after a full work day, the rest of my face still looks pretty matte so I give it a thumbs up at controlling excess surface oil! It doesn’t seem to transfer much, either, and that’s another added bonus!
Since it has a matte finish, I think this foundation is more suitable to normal, combination, and oily skin. I have some dry spots on my face and found it to cling on to those areas a little, which is not uncommon for a matte foundation. I just have to moisturize my skin well beforehand! :)
Here’s how it looks on my face applied in 2 thin layers:
Gotta love the soft matte finish with some serious pore-blurring effect there! My skin on your right looks so much smoother and more even-toned but more importantly, it still looks like skin. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing anything at all. Setting with powder is optional but I always do it just to be on the safe side.
Benefit The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Makeup is perfect for those who prefer their complexion matte but without the heavy feel. I know I’ll be enjoying this one a lot this summer when my face gets more oily. Weightless, long-lasting, mattifying, pore-blurring, and skin-like, it’s hard not to fall in love with it!
