Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masks in Original, Champagne, Smashed, and Maple Review & Swatches

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masks in Original, Champagne, Smashed, and Maple

I suppose by now you probably already know how much I love the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask! I always recommend it to everyone who asks me what to use to heal their dry/chapped lips. I have already written an extensive review on it here so today’s post is only going to be more of a quick comparison post between the Original (natural) shade and the 3 new shades — Champagne, Smashed, and Maple!

In a nutshell

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask is a heavy-duty lip balm with a thick consistency. It is made exclusively of food-grade ingredients including a bio-active blend of organic agave nectar, jojoba oil, vanilla CO2 extract, and antioxidant trans-resveratrol found in red wine. It is free of gluten and petroleum but does contain pharmaceutical-grade Lanolin (a viscous, greasy substance found naturally on sheep’s wool) that some of us are allergic to. While I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, those who are sensitive to Lanolin should probably sample it first! :)

The balm’s thick texture aids in increased adherence to the lips so it’s not at all surprising why the mask can last several hours or through the night on the lips without losing its efficacy. It creates an even, transparent film across the lips to lock in moisture so your lips remain soft and supple throughout and long after wear.

All of the shades except Maple has a sweet honey-vanilla scent that’s not overpowering and vanishes quickly. The formula is slightly tacky to begin with but upon contact with the warmth of the lips, it melts and applies easily without tugging. It leaves a super smooth, and long-lasting shine so it looks beautiful on its own as well as over a lipstick.

The squeezable tubes that I have now are updated packaging that’s made of something else entirely different from the original’s metal tube. It feels like a plastic-coated aluminum but don’t quote me on it. Either way, it’s much easier to dispense the product and doesn’t rip or leak over time, although the grayish coating is probably likely to flake off at some point with continued use.

As mentioned, for a full review of the Original shade, please read my post here. It has a yellowish color in the tube but applies transparent on the lips. It enhances my natural lip color while providing a super glossy finish. I like to use this shade as an overnight lip treatment so that I would wake up with silky soft lips in the morning!

Champagne is the second shade released in the line-up. It is described as a “champagne pearl” but it’s basically a rose pink balm with lots and lots of ultra fine golden shimmer that once applied on the lips creates a gorgeous, iridescent-metallic sheen. The consistency is considerably thicker than the Original formula but it still spreads easily on the lips without feeling grainy. On me, the pink hue doesn’t really come through due to my super pigmented lip color but it does deliver on the shimmery aspect! Would have been nice if it’s a tiny bit more pink! This is also the more opaque shade compared to the other three shades.

Smashed

Smashed is the third shade released and it’s by far my favorite shade! I love using it during the day for it’s brightening, cherry red tint, although the company describes it as more of a “universal red-wine tint“. Unlike Champagne, Smashed does not contain any shimmer, so it’s a pure, translucent red tint on me. Again, I wish the pigmentation was a bit stronger. I love how the red color appeared on my arm swatches but on my lips, the color impact is lost and turns into a somewhat plain and sheer red tint. It’s buildable, of course, but with such thick texture, I’m more comfortable with only a couple of layers on. Nonetheless, Smashed is a really pretty color that will brighten up your face nicely.

For Maple, I have my good blogger friend Liz to thank for! She kindly sent it over to me all the way from Canada! :D Maple is a limited-edition shade created exclusively for Canada. It is infused with real Canadian Maple syrup and smells exactly like Canadian Maple syrup! It’s so yummy! :) The color is a shimmery warm brown with a touch of bronze shine. It provides translucency and sheer color tint similar to Smashed. It isn’t typically my kind of shade but as a collector, I had to have it! :)

For those starting with the product, I recommend slathering it on the first night before bed for a boost of hydration. It has the ability to heal and soothe dry/chapped lips overnight. Continue usage A.M. and P.M. — by itself, under your lipstick, or as a lip gloss — to maintain the healthy lip appearance. Now that the colder temperatures are approaching, there’s no better time to be proactive about keeping your lips in tip-top condition! I’d start with the Original shade but if you prefer a hint of color, then try any of the three gorgeous tinted versions. As a peace of mind, I did not find any differences in terms of longevity, effectiveness, and performance between them so any color you choose is guaranteed to keep your lips glowy and healthy! :)

I’ve been looking for something to help remedy my dry lips! I’ve been using random lip glosses but still wake up with dry lips. Vaseline used to work but now it causes my lips to tingle uncomfortably. Maybe I should try a non-scented version instead…or give these a go! xD

I have the original and champagne (not yet opened.) But the Maple looks great to me but may be hard to get hold of in the US.

Yeah I had to have Liz send one over to me all the way from Canada! The smell is REALLY yummy, though, and if you could get your hands on it, I think it’s worth a try! :)

You have photographed these so beautifully! I have the Maple version and I think it’s my all-time favourite lip balm. The smell and texture are heavenly! xo

I think i mentioned this sometime beore but i have the champagne one and it sucks on me. I find it WAY too hard to squeeze out from the tube and then I feel like it just sits on my lips:( Maybe I got a dud! I still love the jackblack balms way more, but I do agree that this lasts a lot longer. Does it interfere with the longevity of lipsticks when worn under Jaa?

It does interfere with the longevity of the lipstick in the sense that it makes it last even longer!! Hehe. It’s a great lip balm/lip primer to me. :)

Well, I don’t feel so bad about not getting the Maple color now because it probably would not show up on my lips. All four are wonderful.

I love the smell but I have to say it’s my least favorite color. I still wear it from time to time but I love Smashed so much more! :)

  5. Amazing comparison post, Jaa! Thank you! I absolutely adore the OG Agave Lip Mask. No other lip balms come close to healing the lips like it does! I have Maple and Champagne as well and love them both for days when I want a little shimmer and shine without any maintenance. I have one tube of original ALM in my purse and one on my night stand at all times!
