Currently Lovin’: Lip Primer

Unless I’m testing the longevity, I usually layer a base under my lipstick application either to cancel out my natural lip color or to prolong the wear time of the lipstick. Here are three lip primers I’m lovin’ right now.

MAC Lip Erase Lip Balm

I love this one for neutralizing my lip color so that it won’t tweak the actual color of the lipstick I’m wearing (I have super naturally pigmented lips!). It is flesh-toned and has a nice balmy texture that spreads easily on the lips. It sets to a tacky finish so your lipstick has something to grab on to for a longer-lasting wear. Read my full review here.

MAC Prep + Prime Lip

If the lipstick I’m wearing is opaque or if I don’t worry about my lip color interference, then I will use this one. It has a clear balm texture that goes on transparent. You have to wait a minute or so to let it set then follow with the lipstick. It really does help extend the wear time of the lipstick significantly! Read my full review here.

Guerlain KissKiss Liplift

This one is like a mix between the other two. It is slightly fleshed-toned in the tube but becomes mostly clear once blended on the lips. It doesn’t neutralize my lip color as well as the MAC Lip Erase Lip Balm but it does tone it down just slightly. It also leaves a tacky base for the lipstick to hold on to. What I love most about this one is the convenient and beautiful stick and the scent — oh the lovely, fruity scent! Read my mini review here.

Do you have any favorite lip primer? What do you do to extend the wear time of your lipstick?

Yeah… I tried the concealer trick but found it to be too drying on the lips. :( The MAC Lip Erase Lip Balm does really well in canceling out lip color without the drying effect! :)

Oh, interesting products, Jaa! So far I have only tried the lip primer by Urban Decay and it has worked well for me.. but I should try more :D those by MAC are a good start, thanks!

The UD one that comes in a purple stick right? I finished it a while ago but didn’t repurchase yet. Good stuff! Very similar to the Guerlain one in terms of color and consistency. :)

OK so now I feel so primitive because I’ve never tried a lip primer LOL I have the clear Dior liner, but even then I fail to notice that much of a difference in terms of longevity and so on. Maybe I didn’t try it with the right lipsticks? Hmm.

I don’t find clear lip liners to be anything special, either. I have a couple of them and they are just… OK. I guess they are meant to prevent feathering and bleeding, not necessarily increase the longevity.. at least that’s how I feel! :)

I’ve heard great things about the MAC Prep+Prime lip primer. I’d never thought about using a lip primer, but since I’m a lover of bold, matte lips, I may have to check this one out :)

It’s quite a unique product, Krithi! If you ever want your lip color to just last and last or to help subdue your natural lip color, I think this one is worth looking into! :)

Thanks for the rec! Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything from ColourPop yet! Heard so much about their products (at reasonable prices!). What do you recommend I start off with? :)

  4. Hi Jaa,
I have Guerlain’s lip primer, which I like but I have to admit when I need to skip a step in the morning, this is one of the steps which is puff gone first ;-)
Prime here prime that… I hardly got used to prime my eyelids lol oh and I sometimes skip highlighter on the face too ;-))

LOL! Understandable! I actually like the priming step. Face priming, eye priming, lip priming, I do them all. Haha. I skip highlighting most of the time, though!

I haven’t used anything from the Prep + Prime line that I didn’t like! Besides the Prep + Prime Lip, I also really like the Prep + Prime Natural Radiance. I like that it doesn’t feel like traditional primer but more like a creamy lotion. Makes my skin ultra soft! :)

I remember trying it but didn’t actually liking it too much! I don’t really remember what was wrong with it and I might actually ask for a sample again to see if I’ve changed my mind in the meantime ;) xx
