I'm a big fan of BB creams and when I saw this new offering from Guerlain, I knew I just had to get my hands on it. BB usually stands for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm for other brands but Guerlain's BB is for Beauty Booster. It has all the characteristics of a typical BB cream you may have known by now: it acts as an all-in-one face product – moisturizer, sunscreen, base, and foundation. And although I said I'm a BB fan, I have to mention that I'm more a fan of Western BB creams than Asian BB creams since they tend to have a slightly lighter texture and I feel as if they allow my skin to breathe better. They also come in more shade range than the Asian counterparts that usually leave my face ashy. Not to say that Guerlain's comes in a wide variety of shades. Unfortunately, there are only 2 available shades so far: 01 Light and 03 Medium (makes me wonder what happened to the “02”?!).
Guerlain BB cream comes in a pretty pearly nude tube that has a pump dispenser covered by a shiny black cab. The cap does close pretty tight (almost too tight) so it's safe to carry around in your purse. I like anything that comes with a pump because it's more sanitary and mess-free. Plus you can dispense the exact amount needed to avoid any waste of (such expensive) product.
It has a strong scent of delicate floral fragrance that smells divine and it does linger on the skin. I personally don't think the scent is too overpowering but if you are really sensitive to smell, then definitely try a sample first. Guerlain combines linen and silk fiber polymers to create a second-skin effect with the addition of hyaluornic acid to help keep the skin hydrated and plumped. Gotta love anything with hyaluronic acid at this age! It contains both physical (Titanium Dioxide 3.55%) and chemical (Oxybenzone 1.00% and Octinoxate 3.74%) sunscreen to help protect the skin from sunburn. The broad spectrum with SPF 30 is rather nice and higher than most Western BB creams but I'm still going to encourage you to put on an extra layer of sunscreen of an SPF at least 50 underneath. Because, let's be honest, you need a tea spoon amount of sunscreen covering your entire face (and neck) to be effective against the sun rays. For me, I can't use more than half a pump of this BB cream on my entire face, otherwise it will look too thick and that's why I always supplement with regular sunscreen underneath.
The consistency is creamy but thick (due to higher SPF perhaps?). You definitely need to use a brush to spread the cream out for a sheerer application. Dense bristle brush or even a sponge works well and will give a near matte finish. Using fingers alone to apply this BB cream may result in a cakey, mask-like effect. I personally just spread it out with a brush and then press it down into the skin with fingers for a more luminous finish. If you find the formula too thick, try mixing it with another more fluid medium such as primer or elixir for a smoother application. This is definitely on a medium to full coverage side that is enough to help tone down the redness around my nose and also acne scars on my cheeks to give an overall look of evened out complexion.
As for the longevity, it's definitely long-lasting without any drying feeling. It doesn't oxidize and doesn't make my skin any much oilier either which is a plus. My skin looks natural and smooth throughout the day with only minimal fading after 7-8 hours and this is from my own true experience in the last few summer months I've been using it (very impressive!).
The only thing I wish it had more to offer is the color range. For me, 01 Light is too light and 03 Medium is definitely too dark (Hence, I wonder where the 02 is?! It would have been my perfect shade!) and both have pink undertone. Tanned/bronzed skin is not really my thing so I went with the 01 Light. When it's too light, you can always mix with a darker shade of foundation but if you pick the darker shade from the get-go, it's hard to lighten it.
If you are looking for a decent coverage BB cream with higher SPF and added anti-aging benefit, definitely give Guerlain's BB cream a try. It's one of the best on the market right now. Use a little less during summer, and more during winter months, and you can use this BB cream throughout the year. It's truly the one that does it all. :)
