Kate Somerville Daily Deflector Waterlight Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ PA++++ Review & Swatches

It’s almost the end of August and the sun is still out in full force! I like it! What can I say… I’m from a tropical country and the hotter is the better! :) Now, to enjoy the sun at its full force, we need to have a way to protect our precious skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Thanks to Kate and her innovative research, we now have a super liquid-y sunscreen with anti-aging benefits that also has super broad spectrum with super high SPF and PA++++ (right, that’s 4 +’s!). And did I mention chemical-free?!

So what are some of the great stuff in this sunscreen? According to Kate:

Matrixyl™ 3000: Reduces the appearance of wrinkles caused by the contraction of muscles, especially on the forehead and around the eyes
Dynamic Moisture Complex: Maintains skin’s optimal moisture levels by restoring its natural capacity to retain moisture
Shiitake Mushroom: Tightens the look of sagging skin and, over time, helps maintain elasticity and tone

Gotta love all the anti-aging ingredients. :)

If there is one small thing I don’t like about this product, it’s the packaging! It comes in a white plastic bottle with a silver screw cap. Sounds pretty average right? But since this sunscreen is very, very watery, just like the name suggests, it’s making it very difficult to control the amount of liquid that comes out. There were times when I wasn’t being watchful and the watery sunscreen would run off the back of my hand! Talk about messy and a total waste of (expensive) product. To avoid this problem, I pour the product into my palm and just dab it on my face with my fingers.

The formula of this mineral-based sunscreen is of incredibly lightweight fluid. It spreads really well and absorbs instantly. But! There is one caveat. As great as it sounds, this runny sunscreen does leave a discernible white cast. The trick is you have to rub it in really well and wait a few minutes for the white cast to disappear. If you are going to top it with foundation or tinted moisturizer, this shouldn’t be a concern since it will cover the white cast anyway. This sunscreen gives a nice matte satin finish that doubles as a base / makeup primer. There is no greasy or oily feeling here, just a slightly brightened overall complexion (due to the white tint, perhaps?). There is a strong scent that reminds me of “Elmer’s glue mixed with tropical fruits” (this is totally the exact word described by my best friend!). But no worries, the scent disappears rather quickly. Also, make sure to shake the bottle really well before use to get all the ingredients mixed properly.

I am definitely loving this sunscreen. It has everything a good sunscreen should have. The packaging is slightly sub par but that’s something I can live with. Can I also mention the adorable pattern printed on the inside of the box? :)
