Back in March I was sent a lab sample of the new La Mer The Renewal Oil to test out. It came in a white box along with a few other La Mer skincare goodies. There wasn’t any ingredient list included in the package so there was no way to know what’s in the oil. Trusting in the brand, I still went ahead and gave it a go. I played with it and used it in so many ways, not just on my face, but also on my hair, body, and nails. I was very happy with the results so I continued the usage until I almost emptied the bottle. Luckily I was sent a full-sized bottle earlier this month to continue my pampering ritual. I’ve been using this product for roughly 7 months now and I have to say it has become a staple on my vanity. You can do a lot with it and today I’ll share with you my favorite ways to use the product and whether I think it delivers on its promises!
La Mer The Renewal Oil is packaged in a clear glass bottle with a push button glass dropper. The dropper dispenses the oil one drop at a time so you can easily gauge the amount to use according to your needs. I like the simple yet luxurious design and also appreciate the fact that the bottle’s opening has a silicone stopper to prevent the oil leakage around the rim.
La Mer The Renewal Oil is marketed as a multifaceted elixir that you can use on its own to boost hydration and increase the skin’s suppleness and radiance or combine with other skincare products to enhance absorption. You can also mix it with your favorite makeup products to facilitate a smoother application. The full-sized bottle sadly still didn’t come with a full list of ingredients but I was able to find some information from this website.
La Mer The Renewal Oil is rich and full of many good oils!
From meadowfoam oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, eucalyptus leaf oil, cranberry oil, olive fruit oil, camelina oil, to sea buckthorn oil!
This has to be the richest, highest potency facial oil I have used to date but guess what? It doesn’t feel thick at all! In fact, it’s pretty thin, light, runny (almost water-like!) and absorbs almost instantly into the skin leaving nothing but a soft, subtle shine behind to mimic the skin’s natural soft glow. There’s no greasiness, oiliness, or heaviness associated with it. I feel that La Mer really nailed it on the formula! :)
It is a dual-phase oil, meaning when it’s in its “inactive” form, it has two separate layers (as seen below) — a layer of the brand’s trademarked Miracle Broth (water) and a layer of sea-sourced nutrient actives (oil). The ratio of the water:oil is scientifically calculated to mimic the skin’s hydrolipidic layer that results in enhanced absorption of the oil into the skin. To “activate” the oil, simply give the bottle a good shake to properly disperse the ingredients. Once shaken, the oil turns its clear golden liquid into a cloudy, bubbly consistency and is ready to use.
The scent is relaxing and therapeutic. A little strong in the beginning but soon subsides.
The many ways I use the oil and results
- On its own
You can use the oil twice a day, AM and PM, which was what I did when I was still in the States during the colder months. Upon moving back to Thailand, however, I reduced the amount to just once a day. I have been using it at night after I tone my skin to boost hydration and lock in moisture during sleep. It has done wonders for my skin by keeping it soft, supple, healthy, and moisturized. I rarely ever wake up with dry flakes on my skin anymore. Another plus is it didn’t cause irritation or breakout at all. In terms of anti-aging benefits, I can’t say that I’ve seen drastic improvements but that’s only because I don’t have fine lines or wrinkles that are noticeable yet!
- Mix with skincare products
Sometimes I’d mix a little bit of the oil with my face moisturizer so that it absorbs into the skin better, thus resulting in maximum benefits!
- Mix with makeup products
I like mixing the oil with makeup products that I find too drying or setting too fast including certain foundations and concealers. The oil helps the product glide on more smoothly and blend more seamlessly with the skin. Depending on the amount used, it can offer a little bit of dewiness to the face, too!
- On hair
I apply the oil on the ends of my hair to help with split ends. Occasionally I’ll also use it to instantly smooth away frizz! My significant other has a rather dry scalp so I let him use a few drops of the oil. Together we witnessed that his scalp has become less dry and looked much more healthy.
- On hands and nails
I like to dab a little bit of the oil on my cuticles. They used to be really dry but lately I have noticed that their condition has improved so much. Sometimes I’ll also mix a few drops of the oil with my hand cream to increase smoothness and maintain moisture.
- On lips
On days that I plan to wear a drying or mattifying liquid lipstick, I’ll dab a little bit of the oil across my lips and let it soak in first. I find that it helps lessen the drying effect of the lip product and won’t leave my lips feeling parched and flaky afterwards.
- On body
I don’t usually like applying straight oil on my body so I’ve been mixing it with my body lotion instead. Not only does it make my skin feel so much softer, it also adds a little bit of beautiful, subtle glow all over! I’ve been using the brand’s Reparative Body Lotion mixed with the oil and I have to say I love the results! The two play together nicely and leave my skin ultra soft, smooth, and subtly shiny. :)
As you can see, there are so many ways that you can use the La Mer The Renewal Oil! It is a true multipurpose product for me. On my recent 24-hour flight back to Thailand, I made sure to pack the little oil bottle in my carry-on bag so that I could dab a few drops on my skin to help it stay moisturized (see my testimonial on the La Mer website here!). We all know the in-flight air can be harsh on the skin especially on long flights so I was thankful to have this oil as my skin savior!
All in all, my 7 month-long experience with the product has confirmed that the La Mer The Renewal Oil is truly a wonderful product to have handy. I’m not saying it’s a miracle in a bottle. I’m also not saying it’s a must-have at this price point. But am I glad to have tried it and experienced its wonderful benefits? Absolutely yes! And for this reason, I do recommend it to everyone who loves skincare oils (or even those who are skeptical about using oils) as well as those who live in a drier, colder climate as it will help keep your skin, hair, and body in tip-top condition!
