These lip pencils come in a twist up style and are smaller in size than typical chubby sticks. I’d say the size is between chubby sticks and regular eyeliner pens. They have a slanted tip which is great for both outlining and filling in the lips. Since you can’t sharpen these pencils, try to maintain the slant so that you can continue to use the edge to line your lips.

I picked up a total of 3 colors:

  • le Matte Velvety in 403 No Matte-r – nude brown
  • le Matte Velvety in 409 Matte For Me – cherry red
  • la Laque Shiny in 411 Never Lacque-ing – pink mauve

Both le Matte and la Laque are extremely pigmented and yet very comfortable to wear. They don’t fall into lip lines and do not cause any dryness or cakiness. They have a typical smell just like most of L’Oréal lipsticks but it’s not too overpowering or anything.

A lot of matte lip products tend to be heavy and drying but these le Matte Velvety pencils are definitely not. They go on really smoothly and since they are highly opaque, you can practically get a full coverage with just a few swipes across the lips. They are not in any way drying either, in fact, they give a little moisturizing feeling upon application. You can definitely wear it on bare lips but I prefer to put a lip balm underneath to keep my lips moisturized longer. The finish is on the velvety, soft satiny side that looks great both on its own as well as with a lip gloss on top.

As for the la Laque Shiny, they glide on the lips even more smoothly. They are so lightweight and they glide on like a dream. Since they are very opaque, you only need just one coat and you are good to go. I tried putting a few layers on and it got too sticky so I’d limit to just 1 – 2 layers. For these, I don’t feel the need to put a lip gloss on top since the finish is already super glossy.

The 411 Never Lacque-ing is such a perfect everyday pink that is office-appropriate or you could pair it with a smoky eye. The 409 Matte For Me is a subtle red that’s not too loud. I’m, however, a little disappointed with the 403 Matte-r since I was hoping it would be more of a light nude shade that I could double use as a lip liner but it turned out to be too brown for my taste. I might just use it under a bright lipstick to tone down the lip color.

The staying power is of average, it starts to fade at midday and will need a touch-up. The matte red one leaves a soft stained effect on the lips once the color fades while the other two do not. On the display at my local BB&B, there were only 2 of each color available and I was lucky to get all the colors that I wanted. If you want to try these lip pencils, hurry and get to the closest BB&B before they run out!

UPDATE (09/08/13): I’ve seen these pencils not only at BB&B, but at Target as well.

And just a quick note, on the display, the model was supposed to be wearing the 409 Matte For Me which is cherry red, but on her lips, it didn’t look anything cherry red, but more of fuchsia pink. So keep in mind to go with the color on the packaging which is more accurate, do not go by the photo on the display.

Happy hunting! :)
