It’s been a (long) while since I bought my last MAC lipstick! I did a compilation post at the end of 2013 (see it here) and to my horror, my collection hasn’t grown since! Well, actually I bought a couple of those Patentpolish Lip Pencils (review) and Huggable Lipcolours (review) but that’s about it, nothing from the permanent line. So, I’m quite happy to be adding two more shades to my collection! And please forgive me if I didn’t go for the “fall-appropriate” colors. You know I have a thing for pink. ;D
I explained the differences between MAC lipstick finishes in details in my MAC Lipstick Collection 2013 Comparison & Swatches post, so if you’re interested, please follow the link. The two lipsticks I’m featuring today are Pink Plaid and Chatterbox. Pink Plaid has a matte finish while Chatterbox has an amplified creme finish. Both are packaged in a traditional MAC lipstick casing — pearlescent black with silver accent. Both also have the usual MAC lipstick soft vanilla scent (I ❤!).
Pink Plaid may look like a medium rosy pink in the tube but the actual color when swatched and applied on lips is pale, muted purple-tinged pink. It looks slightly nude and powdery on my NC30 complexion. I’m still undecided whether I like this shade on me. It looks decent when paired with a dramatic eye makeup but for everyday office wear, it makes me look washed out and quite “unhealthy”. I think this shade is more suitable to fairer skin tones with pale lips since I imagine it will look more natural on.
Formula-wise, it is a quality matte lipstick! It doesn’t feel as dry as most mattes on the market. In fact, it applies smoothly and evenly as long as you exfoliate and apply a little bit of lip balm on your lips beforehand (it has a tendency to cling on to dry patches and accentuate fine lines if worn directly on dry, bare lips).
It goes on opaque and covers my naturally pigmented lips in one pass. Though I would try not to apply more than a few layers to prevent the finished look from looking cakey and thick. It wears well for about 5 hours on me and while it certainly isn’t a hydrating formula, it isn’t drying, either, even after the color wears off.
Chatterbox is a brighter, more colorful shade in comparison! It is the kind of neutral pink that doesn’t wash me out but it seems to bring out the “yellowness” in my complexion just a little bit. It is still a cheerful and wearable shade nonetheless. It is a color that looks great on its own (or with minimal makeup) as well as with heavy eye makeup.
Being an amplified creme, a hybrid of amplified and cremesheen (my favorite MAC lipstick finish), you can always count on its pigmentation and creamy texture! In fact, it’s so creamy that you may have to blot between layers to prevent the lipstick from becoming too smudgy/slippery. The formula glides on beautifully and does not accentuate dry lips and fine lines at all. It is much more moisturizing than Pink Plaid. A bonus point is that it seems to enhance the appearance of my lips making them look fuller and plump upon application! :)
It is not as opaque as Pink Plaid, though. On my lips, it takes a few passes to achieve a full coverage. The formula leaves a gorgeous soft sheen but will wear down and set to a semi-matte within a couple of hours. The wear time is around 4 hours on me before I notice some fading. It fades evenly, though, and leaves a soft pink stain behind.
So what do you think of Pink Plaid and Chatterbox? Do you see yourself wearing either of them? What is your favorite MAC lipstick color to date?
