MAC Viva Glam Miley Cyrus Lipstick Review & Swatches

I have just spent a good hour reading through the MAC AIDS FUND website to have a better understanding about the MAC Viva Glam campaign. It is an amazing program, really, buying a MAC Viva Glam lipstick is not just buying another lipstick anymore. In the process, you are also helping those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Regardless of the spokesperson, you are supporting a good cause, and that’s all that matters. I think we can all agree to look at the bigger picture here and that is helping others who are much less fortunate. :)

Viva Glam 2015’s spokesperson is the #twerk queen Miley Cyrus. You may love her, or you may not love her, but we can’t deny the fact that she’s the face of one of the most innovative programs to fight against HIV/AIDS. The program provides vital services and strengthens the safety net for people affected by the disease through prevention, treatment, as well as something as simple as providing them basic needs.

For each Viva Glam lipstick that we buy, MAC donates 100% of the selling price to support the cause (yes, every cent of it). Now, that’s something you don’t hear very often from makeup companies!

Interesting facts

Per MAC AIDS Fund, one Viva Glam lipstick equals:

  • 1 personal nutrition counseling session with a registered dietician
  • 1 hospitality kit with hygiene and grooming essentials for a client in a housing program
  • 1 counseling session for an HIV+ woman
  • 1 HIV-prevention workshop conducted by a peer health educator
  • 1 private Therapeutic Recreation session for 1 client
  • 1 school stationery starter pack for a child orphaned by AIDS
  • 1 vegetable seed starter pack for a community garden
  • 1 school stationery starter pack for a child orphaned by AIDS
  • 1 party pack for a child to celebrate Christmas, Easter or a birthday
  • 1 week’s worth of groceries (about 4 bags of food) for 2 clients
  • 1 pair of school shoes for a child orphaned by AIDS
  • 1 party pack for a child to celebrate Christmas, Easter or a birthday
  • 1 month of public transport for a woman to travel to and from doctors’ visits
  • 1 HIV-prevention workshop conducted by a peer health educator
  • 1 rapid oral HIV test
  • 2 emergency boxes filled with non-perishable food
  • 2 hours of childcare for a woman’s children during her doctor’s appointment
  • 2 safer-sex kits (condoms, lube, dental dams, and information)
  • 8 individually tailored, nutritious home-cooked meals
  • 14 blood glucose monitoring strips
  • 15 copies of “Tips to Eating Well with HIV/AIDS” booklets
  • 18 personalized birthday cakes to be hand-delivered to a PLWHA on his/her birthday
  • 23 female condoms or 233 male condoms
  • 37 deliveries of dietetically sound meals

Now, don’t you just feel good about the $16 that you spent? :)

Onto the lipstick review!

MAC Viva Glam Miley Cyrus Lipstick is one bright hot pink shade! It has the Amplified formula which means it applies smoothly, leaves a satiny finish with a subtle sheen, and offers a full, opaque coverage in one pass. For everyday wear, though, I’d just dab it lightly on the center of the lips and spread it out with a fingertip or lip brush to soften the color just a notch.

The lipstick has a MAC’s signature soft vanilla scent that dissipates upon application. The creamy and slightly emollient consistency glides on the lips and lays down the bright pigment without emphasizing dry spots or settling into lip lines. I really love how it makes my lips look so smooth and full after application! On me, the lipstick is partially hydrating and wears well for a good 4-5 hours before fading into a soft red-pink stain that extends the wear to another hour or so.

And here’s a close-up on the lipstick bullet to show you Miss Cyrus’ signature! :)

Below is how it looks on me. Notice how smooth and plump my lips are! :) Although it’s such a vibrant shade, I didn’t find it difficult to apply at all. As long as you have a steady hand, it’s fairly easy to keep the lipstick within the lip line. In the picture below, I applied the lipstick straight from the tube onto bare lips. For sharper/more polished edges, you can always line your lips first. :)

As for the color itself, it is not particularly unique in my opinion. I bet you can find a lot of dupes already in your stash especially if you are a pink lipstick lover (or hoarder, like myself!). Below I compare the MAC Viva Glam Miley Cyrus to a few other hot pink shades in my collection. It is surprisingly very close to the Tom Ford Aphrodisiac (review). I thought it was going to be closer to the MAC Girl About Town!

At this point I am still undecided whether to pick up the Viva Glam Tinted Lipglass since it is just a sheer pink gloss with pearly flecks that I already have something similar in abundance of. It doesn’t seem to add anything much to the look on its own but from online swatches I’ve seen so far, it looks amazingly nice once paired with the lipstick! :)

Have you ever bought any MAC Viva Glam lipstick? What has been your most favorite shade so far? For me, I have to say the Nicki Minaj one (click for swatches)! :)

I have been eyeballing this color!!! I LOVE it!!! I just saw a pic on Instagram last night from one of my friends, both with and without the Lip Glass. I came to the conclusion I need to get the Lipglass too!!! :D :D :D I do remember this now with the donating to Aids! Thanks for bringing it back to my attention Jaa! :). Thanks also for listing where those donations are helping!!! That just pushed me over the edge! :D. I agree with Melissa, plenty of good reasons to buy it!!! Lovely review Jaa!!! :)

Thanks so much, Janet! I’d love to see how it looks on you when paired with the Lipglass! :) Yeah, it just makes you feel better about buying makeup. I know it’s not a whole lot of money but at least it is something! :)

I swatched this a little while back, and I have to say I am SMITTEN! Now that I have seen it on you, I’ll definitely have to look into it and maybe pick it up. What a stunning shade! Kudos to MAC making such a commitment as well :)

      1. says: Sunny

Oh no. The photo you saw on Instagram was taken during the press preview :) I don’t even think this is available here yet!

I love the shade. It’s been one of the two recent MAC releases I’ve considered. This and the purple palette from the Toledo collection.

Ooh, this is absolutely gorgeous! I’m a sucker for a bright pink and this looks like a good one. And great how you broke down where the Viva Glam funds go!

  8. says: Lily

Not particularly interested in Miley, no love no hate :-) This lipstick is gorgeous though. It’s a beautiful pink on you Jaa. And kudos to MAC for this effort!

    1. says: Jaa

Same here. I am neutral to Miley, too. I love supporting the program, though, considering that we are working with HIV in our lab! :)

Well, if nothing else, it looks like an affordable dupe for TF Aphrodisiac, LOL!

The Viva Glam stuff is the only stuff I’d actually consider buying from MAC, since the money doesn’t go into the pockets of MAC itself! ;-) Having said that, it’ll still be nearly $50 for the lipstick here, so it’s not exactly a purchase that I can make on a whim. I do kind of wish that they’d pick a more inspiring individual to be the face of it though. When I think of Miley Cyrus, ‘glam’ is about the last word that comes to mind. I don’t really have a personal issue with her (why would I?) but there are so many actually inspiring women out there (including plenty in the entertainment industry) that I wish MAC would go for. In terms of the lipstick itself, I love the colour, but I think I probably already own a couple of similar things. If it were $16, I’d go for it though!

    1. says: Jaa

Haha yeah, a more affordable option to the TF Aphrodisiac for sure! I’d rather donate $50 directly to the charity if you were to pay that much for a lipstick! LOL! Cray cray! MAC seems to always choose controversial personalities for the program, though, and I guess they kind of want to stick with that. People that are loud, aren’t afraid to speak their mind, and well known (not necessarily well-liked!), and even better if they attract a younger crowd, too, to increase more awareness. Just my guess!

It actually looks a lot better than I had expected! I thought it was going to be this typical shade.. but it has something special to it :) I like it!

    1. says: Jaa

It’s a nice color for sure but it’s not undupeable. I guess they had to find a “safe” color for everyone; the more sale, the more dollars to the campaign, the more people will get help. Does that make sense?

      1. says: Natasja

That makes a lot of sense… but it really is a reason for me not to buy it.. :P I’ve so many lip products similar to this shade.. so yeah, I’m good haha.

  12. Interesting, this one is close to Aphrodisiac, which doesn’t work on my complexion. So I guess I should try this one too before pulling the trigger. I still couldn’t find a way to figure out what would look good on me and what not. It seems to have a very complicated equation ;-)

    1. says: Jaa

What are you talking about, Sara?!! From what I know, you look great in EVERYTHING!!!! And you know I’m not the only one who thinks this! ;)
