Makeup Minis Vol.11

Makeup Minis is where I feature deluxe samples I received with my online and/or in-store purchases. I’ll give you a short description of the product, my initial impression and whether I plan to purchase a full-sized version. I am only listing 3 items per volume to keep the post short and fun! :)

MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara

Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara

I cannot believe how BLACK this mascara is! It has to be the blackest of the blackest mascaras I’ve used to date! The formula is a little too wet and the bristles pick up too much product, so wipe before applying! It does a decent job at lengthening and volumizing my thin and short lashes but unfortunately it clumps up too easily. At least it doesn’t smudge or transfer! :)

Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder

Make Up For Ever
HD Microfinish Powder

A product raved by so many! This is one very, very fine loose powder so it creates quite a bit of “dust” during use. When applied lightly, it gives skin a soft-focus effect that blurs skin texture. However, when applied a little too much, skin can look ashy and ghastly white. It also causes flashback in flash photography so try not to use it at night!

Benefit Stay Don't Stray Eye Primer

Stay Don’t Stray Eye Primer

I feel that this is not just an ordinary eyeshadow primer but one that acts like a concealer as well. The consistency is thicker than any eye primer I’ve used, and it’s tinted, so it’s great for covering up veins and redness. It can feel a little cakey if applied too much, though. When used sparingly, it brightens up the eye and keep shadows stay vibrant and crease-free all day!

On the powder, I found Armani loose gives me a similar effect but isn’t as drying, caking, and it never looks ashy or flashes back in photos. I also like that it adds a hint of glow to the skin.

I tried the Benefit primer in Sephora and it was a cake-y mess in the swatch.

Never tried the Armani loose powder! I bet it’s really nice? I think the key to using the Benefit primer is only using the tiniest amount possible. Too much and it will cake. :)

Hey Jaa, I have tried the MUFE HD powder, but I wasn’t impressed. It does its job, but that’s about it. I’m not getting the extra OOMPH like what I’d get with Guerlain Meteorites. I’ve always heard great things about Benefit Stay Don’t Stray, but many complain about the pump. Apparently you always end up with too much product and it goes to waste. I hope Benefit will do something about it at some point!

Oh I’m lucky then! This sample comes with a doe-foot applicator! :D And I have a feeling it’s going to last me a looooooooong time since I only need a super thin layer each time. :)

I have that sample of Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara, too, when I did my first Nordie purchase! I haven’t opened it yet though! Thanks for the heads up! Oooh btw, i can’t see the thumbnails of hellojaa on my bloglovin feeds. Just thought i’d let you know. Stay fab!!

I have a little sample of Stay don’t Stray somewhere I think… but I am still working my way through the mountain of samples of UD’s primer potion, LOL! I’m fortunate in that I don’t need eyeshadow primer every time I want to put eye makeup on though, so that’s probably why I haven’t gotten to it…

The HD powder sounds interesting – I think the only person I’d really seen rave about it liked it to set just her undereye concealer/area. I’m not sure if it’s better at that than anything else, but I have to admit, I have my eye on the UD face powder first (although that one isn’t translucent, to be fair).

You don’t? And your eyeshadows pretty much stay on all day? I’m JEL!!! The powder looks great as long as you are not going to be in any flash photography! :)

I just added the Mac mascara sample to my basket! I love rich, black formulas, but I’ve never tried a Mac mascara before so we shall see how it goes! I’m not a huge fan of clumps, since I only have three eyelashes on each eye to begin with lol.

Ah, glad your site is up and running! (I wasn’t able to comment earlier today ;o)
I think I’ve used up a mini size of the MUFE powder a long time ago, then I’ve been using the cheaper alternative, e.l.f. high definition powder for many years. It has the same problem, though. I like the pressed version of NARS powder which is much natural with no fallouts. I might purchase the loose version as well.

My site is down a lot lately! My host said I need to optimize my blog but I just haven’t had time to do that yet. Heard lots of good things about Nars loose powder — I may have to check it out in person soon. :)

Hi Jaa, I nearly bought the Make up Forever loose powder on my trip. Now I am glad I didn’t. Thanks again for saving me some money ^-^

  8. MAC ZFBL was a favorite of mine for almost an entire year! I recently got a sample of it for my upcoming trip to Arizona and I’m so excited to have it again. It doesn’t transfer or smudge at all, but man once water hits it, you can end up with a full-on Courtney Love style eye situation in seconds! I do love how quickly it removes and there’s no trace left behind.

I’m trying my hardest to polish off that sample jar of MUFE HD powder and it will never die. I don’t even think I’ve gone through 1/4 of it, so the thought of a full size jar terrifies me, LOL. As for the Benefit primer, I tried a sample of it a few years ago as well and thought the same as you. Never did pick up a full size though because I’ve also been struggling to finish MAC Paint Pot in Ochre.

    1. says: Jaa

Haha I know what you mean! I’m trying to finish mine as well but it just seems impossible! I’ve never tried MAC Paint Pot! How do you like it?

      1. says: Liz

They’re very creamy and apply nicely. Before all the shadow primers came out, Paint Pots were used as shadow base and they last well when layered up but aren’t waterproof or particularly long-lasting on their own. The shimmery ones tend to dry out faster than the mattes, but I’ve had my Soft Ochre for at least five years now and it shows no sign of changing texture. I should toss it because it’s old but it seriously doesn’t feel that way.

Ahh I see. Do you happen to have Painterly (I think that’s the name?), too? Heard so much rave about this one as well!

5 years and still not dried out! Wow, sounds like something worth investing. I usually hesitate to purchase a cream formula because I’m afraid it will dry out soon and become useless and I won’t get my money’s worth. LOL.
