Marc Jacobs (P)Outliner Longwear Lip Pencil in Honey(bun) Review & Swatches

Nope, I’m not done with Marc Jacobs Spring 2015 Collection yet! :D I’m actually saving my favorite piece for last. Is it a little odd to say that I’m most interested in the lip liner out of everything in the collection? I can’t help it. I’m crazy about priming and lining my lips so this is a must-buy for me. :)

Marc Jacobs (P)Outliner Longwear Lip Pencil features a retractable, twist-up style packaging with a color-coded end. Unlike the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon, the lip liner does not come with a built-in sharpener. It has a fairly pointy tip so that you can line and define your lips precisely with ease. To avoid dulling, I’d try to turn it side ways to fill in.

There are 3 shades to choose from:

  1. Prim(rose) 304 – “cocoa spice” or neutral rose;
  2. Honey(bun) 302 – “rosy nude” or neutral pink; and
  3. Nude(ist) 300 – “cafe au lait” or brownish nude

but since I have my criteria for choosing lip liner color (has to be lighter than my natural lip color to cancel out the pigmentation on my lips; no MLBB or darker shade; no brown undertones), I went with Honey(bun).

Honey(bun) is the perfect neutral lip liner color for me. It has a bit of pink, a bit of peach, and a bit of beige that mutes my lip color just enough that it doesn’t interfere with the lip color I put on top. It pairs well with nude, pink, or peach lipsticks or you can wear it alone under a sheer gloss or tinted lip balm for a long-lasting nude-ish lip look.

The unscented, cream-gel formula is supposedly infused with collagen to help fill in lip lines and prevent bleeding. When applied lightly, it does smooth out the texture of my lips and create a lasting canvas for my lip color. However, I notice that if I go over it in multiple layers, the pigment will eventually fall into lip lines and accentuate them as a result.

The formula leaves a slightly tacky finish so that the layering lip color has something to adhere to. Being semi-matte, it has a tendency to feel and look drying on its own, so I’d always top it with another lip product be it lip balm, lip gloss, or lipstick for added comfort and a healthier lip appearance. I’d also apply it over exfoliated and moisturized lips only to enhance the glide and alleviate dryness.

The application provides a near-opaque coverage in one pass and one that lasts for hours on end! Not only does it make my lip color glide on better and look better, it also doubles or triples the wear time. My Dior Addict Lipsticks usually last only a couple hours on me, but with Honey(bun) underneath, the color stays perfectly intact for another 2-3 hours. :)

Here’s how it looks on me. I like that it has enough color so that I don’t look too pale or washed out. My lip lines seem accentuated a little in the picture due to layering but I was just trying to show you the true color of the lip liner. For normal everyday usage, a light coverage should be sufficient. :)

So how do you like Honey(bun)? Did you pick up anything from the Spring 2015 Collection? I’m debating whether I should get the #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder since I rarely contour my face. I swatched it once in-store, and my goodness, the powder feels so incredibly velvety, like it’s not even powder at all! The Shape Contour and Blush Brush No. 15 is also calling my name. The bristles are so soft and it has a good size and perfect shape for applying cheek products! :)

LOL. That smiley swatch is so cute!
I hardly wear lipliners nowadays, so this lip pencil doesn’t particularly appeal to me. But the texture sure looks creamy and soft (in a good way), so I can easily see how it can be applied all over and works as the most flattering matte lippie on you. :)

Haha thanks, Lena! I like the bow, lol. I love lip liners; I have a whole collection of them, mostly nude shades. ^_^”

Hey Jaa, I love this shade on you! It’ll most probably wash me out, but it looks great on you! I like the idea of using it as a primer tho. Maybe I should find something like this that works for me :)

    1. says: Jaa

Nah… you’ll never use it, Sunny. Don’t waste your money. You are the swipe-and-go lipstick kind of girl! LOL!

A beautiful soft shade in a very special package.. I’d say! But the shade looks very different on your lips! I don’t wear lipliners a lot though.. I only have two xD I’m working on it :P so I’d opt for cheaper ones.

    1. says: Jaa

I think it’s because my lips are so naturally pigmented! :) If you don’t use them often, then I guess it’s better to find something more affordable!

I love your photography in this post! I’ve been getting more into lip liners recently and do find them helpful to plump my lips a bit since I’ve lost some volume there as I age. I will go check these out!

    1. says: Jaa

Thanks, Meiko! <3 These do not plump lips, though. They just make them look smoother and also help cancel out discoloration! :)

There are also some clear ones that are great for preventing bleeding, too! Many brands make it such as Too Face and MAC to name a few. :)

Hi Jaa, I saw these lip liners in person and they are really pretty. If I were to get one, I’d pick Honey(bun).

I saw those contouring powders too when I was in Vegas and I am in love. I meant to go back and get it but then my injury happened so I couldn’t but maybe I will order it online.

    1. says: Jaa

Awww.. sorry to hear that, Agata! Are you at least feeling a bit better now? The contouring powders are incredible! I would love to know what you think if you decide to buy it! :)

      1. says: Agata

Not really feeling better but at least I am safe at home, I was scared of the flight back home.

Those contouring powders seem so soft but there are so many contouring products at the moment that i can’t decide what to get!

It’s a bit insane that I want to buy this just for the packaging. :p
If there’s a mlbb shade for me, I definitely get it. It looks really good on you Jaa! ^_^

  7. says: Lily

I don’t line my lips often and when I do, it’s mostly for a bold lip color, to even out my lips or to tidy things up :-)

  8. says: cindy

I’m lucky to have lips that are even and don’t cause lipsticks to bleed so I never had a use for lip liners. It wasn’t until I came across the UD Ozone lip liner that my lip game has changed. No longer am I afraid that my bold lip choices would smear and smudge! These days, it doesn’t get much action since im using tinted balms and such for easy application and touch ups but I no longer scoff at lip liners

    1. says: Jaa

Oh you lucky you! ;) I always have to line my lips either with a lip liner or lip balm depending on the laziness level. Haha

Haven’t tried the UD Ozone! Is that the clear one?

      1. says: Cindy

Yeah it’s clear so I didn’t think it would do much but it does prolong the wear by 2 hours than if I didn’t wear one. It does make application easier and smoother if I wear the lipliner all over my lips. Lipstick tends to wear off more evenly too xD

  9. OH MY, JAA! This shade is beautiful as fudge and it looks amazing against your skintone. Also, the pencil itself looks so luxurious! I will need to look at this when I’m in Valencia next month…

    1. says: Jaa

It will be next month in 4 days! Yay!! I hope you bring back LOTS of Marc Jacobs products! I highly recommend their gel eyeliner! :)
