With so many new makeup releases for the holiday season, it is hard to decide what to purchase and what not. This year I’ve been doing pretty good at buying just the things I really want. You know, the kind that you love at first sight/swipe/swatch and when you come home you still think about it for the next 3 days. That is how I know I really want it and have to have it! And one of such said thing I’ve come across this year is the new NARS lip pencil set called Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret!
NARS Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret is a limited edition lip pencil set released exclusively for the NARS Laced with Edge Holiday 2014 Collection. The set contains 5 lip pencils in 2 different textures — 3 satins and 2 velvet mattes. The pencils are not twist-up style and will require sharpening (sharpener not included). The disadvantage of this is that you will lose a little bit of product each time you sharpen them but on the bright side, you can sharpen them to a very pointed tip. To prevent the tip from becoming dull too easily, try to use the tip only to line and then flip to the flat side to fill in your lips.
The pencils are housed in a long, rectangular transparent acrylic box with the “Laced with Edge” pattern in white printed throughout. It is a thick and sturdy box that once you remove the pencils (and insert), you can reuse it for storage of your makeup or tools. I use mine to store some of my eye brushes. :)
The mini-sized pencils may seem convenient to take with you on the go but before tossing them in your makeup bag, make sure that the cap is securely close all the way. I’ve been in the situation where the cap popped right off because there was too much air trapped inside. So, be careful!
I think NARS did great with the shade selection in this set. The colors are well thought out and include a shade for every occasion. There are some basic pale nude and peachy nude as well as some bolder colors such as pink, coral, and red. You can also mix and match them to create even more colors, too. Those with a black ring on the colored end of the pencil have a satin texture whereas those without have a velvet matte texture.
The colors included in this set are Descanso, Torres Del Paine, Yu, Iberico, and Cruella.
- Descanso – a tea rose; satin texture
This is basically a pale peachy pink nude on me and I really like paring it with a dark smokey eye! :) The formula goes on smoothly and provides a semi-opaque finish in one pass. It leaves my lips slightly shiny with a light hydrating feel for a couple of hours but after that it fades into just a pale nude color and with a slight drying feel. It is a beautiful color but I wish the wear time was a bit better.
- Torres Del Paine – a peach coral; satin texture
This is a tricky color to wear for me. On unprimed lips, the super pale peachy nude pigments tend to apply unevenly due to the transclucency and creaminess of the formula. To get a good color payoff, I have to apply in multiple layers which sometimes leads to a thick and cakey feel. It doesn’t seem to want to adhere to my lips at all unless I apply it over a smoothing lip primer. When worn over a primer, the formula feels less dry and is less likely to settle into lip lines and emphasize imperfections. The wear time is quite short as the color tends to fade quickly after just a couple of hours.
- Yu – a shocking pink; satin texture
Yu is a bright (and frightening) hot pink and the most fun color in the set! The color payoff is incredibly rich and intense and even on my pigmented lips, one pass is more than enough to get an opaque finish. The formula feels super smooth and leaves some serious shine. It has the same satin texture as Descanso and Torres Del Paine but it lasts much, much longer. Yu wears comfortably well for 4-5 hours on me before fading into a non-drying pink stain that is quite difficult to remove! :D
- Iberico – an intense coral; velvet matte texture
This one is a gorgeous orange coral that will light up your face the moment you put it on! It’s such a bold and “modern” color that I think I’ll get a lot of use out of. The velvety and richly-pigmented texture applies smoothly and evenly, coating my lips with an opaque finish in one stroke. Even though it leaves a matte appearance, I don’t find it to be overly drying at all. The color stays put for 4-5 hours on me and from there fades slightly into a dark coral stain.
- Cruella – a scarlet red; velvet matte texture
Such a beautiful vampy red! It tends to wash out the “yellow” tone of my skin a bit, though. Similar to Iberico, Cruella is incredibly pigmented and provides full coverage in one pass. The velvety matte finish does feel drying just slightly towards the end but it does not seem to highlight any lip imperfections during wear. The color wears well for 4-5 hours before fading into a red stain.
The edgy look!
For this photo shoot I thought I’d do something different with the lighting to reflect my mood. The weather where I live has been pretty depressing for the past few weeks. There hasn’t been any sunshine for 15 days now (yes, I count) and I am going bananas!
So I present you; the edgy and desaturated version of me:
I am so not made for this kind of weather. Really, I’m not. It’s hard for me to be happy and productive when it’s always cold and dark outside. :(
Anyways… moving on…
Yes, I do recommend the Nars Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret! Especially for those who like to occasionally wear bold lips but do not want to invest in a full-sized version (which would probably take a long time to finish). Considering that a regular NARS lip pencil will set you back $25 each, this is absolutely a great deal because you get to try different colors and formulas for the price of less than 2 full-sized ones. I am pretty happy with all 5 colors, even the nudes, which surprisingly do not seem to wash out my complexion at all. This is definitely one of the best holiday gift sets I have purchased thus far! :)
Do you tend to wear bolder makeup in winter? How do you cope with the cold and gloomy weather? Do you prefer seasonal weather variations or warm weather all year round?
