Okay, I’ll be honest with you (and please don’t judge me for what I’m about to say), I bought these lipsticks because of the packaging! I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it right?! Aren’t we all drawn to beautiful things….
Let me elaborate a little further. The packaging is made of smooth, matte finish plastic that reflects the matte lipstick inside. The color of the tube is a perfect red with Kate’s name in black on the cap and look at that tiny little heart under her name! Isn’t that like, super chic? Not to mention very unique. :) On the top of the cap is Rimmel’s crown logo which I also find adorable. The cap shuts with a click sound so you have nothing to worry about when tossing them in your makeup pouch. Let’s just say I’m totally giving these lippies a 10 for packaging.
These matte lipsticks come in a total of 10 shades ranging from pale nudes to everyday pinks to bold reds that would compliment a wide variety of skin tones (or one’s mood). Bare in mind that these do not have names, but rather just plain numbers at the bottom of the tube but don’t fret! The number is printed on a colored sticker that matches the color of the lipstick inside.
I picked up 3 colors to try out:
- 101 – mauve-pink
- 102 – bright coral pink
- 113 – extremely pale beige nude
I detected a very strong, sweet fruity scent, almost like a strawberry bubblegum scent in all of them which I find very pleasing! It’s a very synthetic scent though, so if you are sensitive to fragrances, these may not be for you. In term of texture, these do not have typical characteristics of matte lipsticks (I’m talking dry, pulling, tugging, and heavy feeling). Surprisingly even to myself, these are the light, moisturizing kind of matte lipsticks that will leave a tiny bit of shine after application. I’d say the finish is more of a beautiful, smooth satin than completely matte.
The colors 101 and 102 are super creamy and richly pigmented and with just one to two quick swipes yields a completely opaque color on the lips. The 113, on the other hand, is very… slippery and I don’t feel like it’s grabbing onto your lips but rather just “floating” on top and as a result, its staying power is almost non-existent. The color is unbuildable either since it’s too slick. This is such a huge letdown for me since I was hoping it would be the perfect matte nude. The other two pink shades I can easily get about 2-3 hours of wear with minimal eating and drinking and they kind of leave a soft stain effect on the lips once the color fades and they become more matte. These do not bleed or feather on my lips even without a lip liner/primer underneath.
I did not find these to be drying at all. In fact, I can skip a lip balm altogether but obviously some people will find it not hydrating enough. In that case, you can always start with a lip balm to add extra hydration. For an even application, I personally like to start with well exfoliated lips, and completely rid of oil (blot, blot, blot!). This serves as the best canvas for matte lipsticks in my opinion. Then I apply the color straight from the tube. Since they glide on like silk, I did not experience any dragging or pulling. However, if you have any dryness or flakiness, these will emphasize them and you will feel some resistance so make sure your lips are well prepped prior to application.
These lipsticks came out earlier this year for the Spring collection and the good news is I still see them at almost every drugstore so you won’t have a hard time getting a hold of them. The price is a total bargain for the quality so it is totally okay if you want to grab a few. ;) I’m really pleased with these lipsticks and would recommend them to anyone (except #113!).
