Now that I’m living in a super hot and humid weather, there’s no better condition to test whether a makeup’s long-wearing claim is true! First to enter the challenge is Sephora Long-Lasting 12HR Wear Eye Liner that promises a blast of intense color that lasts up to 12 hours!
Sephora Long-Lasting 12HR Wear Eye Liner is packaged in a way that you have to dip the applicator into the “tube” for product. It is easy to use and convenient but it is less sanitary than a pen form. When you replace the applicator, you are also introducing your eye makeup (eyeshadow, glitter/shimmer, eye primer, and so on) back into the tube as well. I’d advise wiping the applicator clean before closing the unit after every use to keep the product inside clean and the color true to its original color.
The applicator has a long and tapered felt-tip style. It took me a few tries before I became accustomed to it. The long tip somehow seems to always “touch” my eyelashes (and clumps them) no matter what I do and more often than not I find myself cleaning my lashes with a spoolie in the middle of lining my eye. It also picks up a little more product than I’d like so unless you’re going for a dramatic cat eye, it’s better to wipe off the excess first. It has good flexibility, though. It doesn’t feel flimsy, too soft, or too hard. I am able to create a crisp thick or thin line with ease as long as I have a steady hand. Just don’t forget to shake the tube thoroughly before use to ensure the formula is properly mixed!
The colors I have are:
- 13 Fancy Blue – bright azure blue; matte finish
Such a beautiful, beautiful bright blue and if you look closely (see below) at the applicator, you’ll see specks of shimmer everywhere. Unfortunately the shimmer does not translate at all on the lids. It will be just like a matte blue liner once the formula sets. One thing I’m a little disappointed with is that the color “dims” a little once dried and does not appear as bright blue as seen in the tube.
- 01 Black – black; matte finish
Black is an intense kind of black and I’m glad to see that the intensity stays strong once the formula sets. There’s no “muting” effect with this one. I also notice that the formula is less watery than the Fancy Blue but there is no visible difference in the application.
Both colors are bold, ultra pigmented, and provide a smooth and opaque coverage in one stroke. And if you are looking for a matte eyeliner, you’re in luck since both Fancy Blue and Black leave a complete matte finish! Plus, it’s the kind of matte that doesn’t get flaky as the day goes on! :)
I have tested the formula in 2 different conditions: indoor office settings and outdoor in hot sun and high humidity.
Indoor: The formula stays budge-proof up to 12 hours as claimed. There’s no smearing, smudging, or transferring that I’m aware of. However, if you tend to have watery eyes, these will run. They claim to be “long-wearing”, not “waterproof”, so I suppose there’s no false claim here.
Outdoor: I experience a little bit of smudging at the outer corners of my eyes around the 3 hour mark but the rest of the application is still intact. Nothing a good Targeted Eye Remover Swab can’t fix, though!
This leads me to think that the formula struggles a little bit where there’s moisture involved. The good thing is that it is easy to remove with just a cleanser and warm water at the end of the day! :)
In the arm swatch photo above, you can see part of the liner is still wet which is how the product comes out. Within a second or two, though (literally), it will set to a complete matte finish. There’s not a lot of “play time” here so you kind of have to have a super speedy and steady hand in order to get a smooth application! Besides Fancy Blue and Black, there are more colors in the line-up as well, some of them even have glitter! I’m making a mental note to check them out the next time I’m at Sephora! :)
