Review & Usage

Marc Jacobs The Face II Sculpting Foundation Brush No. 2 is like a big sister brush to the Conceal Full Cover Correcting Brush No. 14 (review) in the sense that it has the same “slanted” surface on one side and “flat” surface on the other. Looking at the side profile, you will notice a resemblance to the tip of the finger. The slanted surface is really great for applying foundation on the face using either dabbing, pressing, or buffing motions while the sides of the brush is perfect for precise contouring.

The head is made of two-toned, synthetic, antibacterial hairs that are extremely densely packed. The hairs are short and “stubby” but still feel super soft and flexible enough to get into the contours of the face easily. The brush can be used to apply base products in any formulation be it powder, liquid, mousse, or cream but I have seen best results using it with the liquid and cream. Since the hairs are so dense, it is easy to achieve a flawless, streak-free, airbrushed-like application with this brush, but dense hairs also means it takes quite an effort to clean and requires additional time for the brush to dry completely.

I have not noticed any shedding with this brush so far (I have had it for a little more than a year now) but the lettering on the black handle has started to wear off just a bit. Speaking of the handle, it is rather chubby and may require some getting used to especially if you have rather small hands. It also has some heft to it but I have not experienced any difficulties maneuvering it on my face.

Reminds me of Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and it’s one of my favourites. Looks like this is something I’d like too. I have to check this out together with the bronzer brush :-)

Oh I’d get the bronzer brush first if you had to choose just one! It’s huge, and soft, and fluffy, and so much fun to use! LOL!

Hey Jaa… thanks for the review. I feel this would be a great foundation brush and also a great tool for buffing concealer under the eyes.
A little off the topic, have you used Marc’s bronzer brush #12. I have my eyes on it for many days now. Oh God, it’s so expensive!!

They are similar, aren’t they? I tend to reach for the MJ one more often though since it’s bigger and can cover my face in less time. The RT one is half the size smaller and not as dense but it sure cleans and dries faster! :)

this just LOOKS so plush. like it would buff in anything wonderfully and you seem to have a good experience with it.
i hear you about the cleaning thing. brushes that have touched foundation are the hardest to clean for me and i ahve one that’s simliarly dense…it always takes a lot of rinses.

Marc Jacobs really makes everything, huh? Love your in-depth review and the high quality photos – too bad as a poor student a 50 dollar brush is just not for me lol.

Thanks, Olivia! Maybe some day after you finish school? If I were you, I’d rather spend the $50 on something else anyway such as food, movie, or stationery. ;D
